In the heart of Toledo, The Collective is making waves as a hub of empowerment, connection, and celebration for the city’s Black LGBTQ+ community. Founded on the Located in the heart of Toledo, The Collective is a dynamic organization dedicated to empowering, connecting, and celebrating the city of Toledo’s Black LGBTQ+ community. Rooted in the values of unity and advocacy, the group works to create environments where individuals feel secure, supported, and recognized. These efforts are the brainchild of Toledo Native Taren Lucci.
The Collective's is a non-profit created in 2020. It is Women-owned, Minority-owned, LGBTQ+ owned, Black-owned. Their central focus is on fostering community. Its members cultivate a strong sense of belonging, providing mutual support and elevating voices that have often been marginalized. Taren emphasizes, "We want everyone to know this is a family, all are welcomed." highlighting their commitment to establishing spaces that embrace authenticity without the threat of judgment or discrimination.
Their commitment extends into the wider community through volunteer efforts. The Collective contributes to Toledo by collaborating with local groups. The organization champions the rights and welfare of the Black LGBTQ+ community while providing resources aimed at promoting citywide inclusivity and understanding.
Witnessing the power of joy and cultural pride, The Collective hosts its annual "Family Reunion" Festival. Which was an idea to bring people of all different backgrounds together surrounded by the skyline of downtown Toledo. Levis Square was the perfect backdrop for this effort. This signature event celebrates the deep impact of culture on the broader LGBTQ+ community. The festival is a lively display of resilience and artistry, featuring music, food, and various performances.
Throughout the year, The Collective also arranges a variety of events, including art shows, bowling nights, and themed parties. These gatherings provide fun and valuable opportunities for members to connect, socialize, and build lasting bonds.
Ultimately, The Collective has established itself as a crucial source of safe spaces. In a world where acceptance is not always a given, its efforts ensure that Toledo's Black LGBTQ+ community has a place to call its own. For many, The Collective is more than an organization, it's family.
