Stone Productions Marks 10 Years With Tony-Winning “Avenue Q”

Stone Productions is celebrating its 10th anniversary season by opening with the Tony Award-winning musical “Avenue Q,” a bold and unconventional choice that reflects the company’s decade-long commitment to provocative storytelling and boundary-pushing theater.

Founded with a mission to challenge traditional expectations, Stone Productions has carved out a distinct place in the Toledo arts scene. Director Derek Roe describes the company as “the renegade of Toledo theater,” adding that it consistently aims to “push the envelope” through its productions.

That philosophy is on full display with “Avenue Q,” a musical that blends humor, puppetry and raw honesty to explore complex social themes. While often recognized for its irreverent comedy, Roe emphasized the show’s emotional depth. “Avenue Q makes you feel. It makes you laugh, it makes you want to cry,” he said.

Originally debuting on Broadway in 2003, “Avenue Q” centers on young adults navigating adulthood, identity and purpose. Roe noted the show’s continued relevance, pointing to its exploration of racism and homelessness as themes that resonate strongly in today’s social climate. “The show is really relevant today due to the terms of racism and homelessness,” he said.

The production will open the first week of February at the Collingwood Arts Center, launching a milestone season for the company. As Stone Productions enters its second decade, the anniversary season underscores its ongoing dedication to meaningful, fearless theater.
